Emerging trends in the design industry demand new ways of thinking about the professional practice of design. This requires new interpretation of what design means and what it takes to succeed in the design practice.
The Design Integrated Studies (DIS) curriculum draws reference from the changing needs of design practice to provide the foundation for design exploration and communication. The curriculum is broad-based, infusing design theory, critical and visual studies, history and cultural studies, design technology, entrepreneurship and professional practice into a cross-disciplinary dimension in the design learning experience in Temasek Design School.
Central to the School's philosophy of nurturing thinkers and doers in its commitment to preparing students to remain relevant to the real world today, the DIS curriculum provides the breadth of the design field in close interaction with the design courses while adapting to the changing needs of the design practice. This demands not only a curriculum structure that is flexible, but also inspiration from a wide variety of disciplines, offering students alternative ways to access design information, articulate design thinking and communicate design ideas.
With the demand for designers who are creative, sensitive, intelligent, easily adaptable, change-ready and with the ability to undertake multi-tasks in the increasingly complex design environment, DIS is committed to an evolutionary approach to providing the impetus for professional development to students. This will enable them to assume leadership roles in the future to re-define the meaning of design and to extend the frontier of professional design practice.
