Temasek Design School’s DESIGN UNPLUGGED Presents A Lecture and Workshop by Tom Klinkowstein

Lecture: 'You Cannot Not Communicate'
LT 25 Monday 18th September 2006 10am -12pm

Horizon Projects Workshop: HyperBrands
2pm 18th -19th September Multi-Purpose Room 1 Level 3

Design Unplugged brings you the Horizon Projects which begin with a “Future Frame of Reference” (hypothetical technological conditions) from within which workshop participants propose new services, products, communication campaigns and spaces.

Implied in the process is that creative thinking outside of the usual day-to-day patterns can help transcend economic, geographic, social and creative barriers, leading to personal insight into professional options and capabilities.

Rather than exclusively using formal considerations (i.e., color, layout, typography, materials, etc.), proposals originate from extrapolated behavioral changes implied in the Future Frame of Reference.

Horizon Project proposals are considered normally unreachable and idealized in the short term, but are strategically relevant (i.e., not complete fantasy) for the middle and long term. They are on the far edge of possibility within the lifetime of the workshop participants.

At the end of the workshop, participants “look back from the future” to see how what they have proposed for the future might be applicable to present conditions.

Tom Klinkowstein is President and Creative Director of Media A, LLC, an internationally recognized design and consulting group with clients such as IBM, NASA, Novartis, Reuters, the Ford Foundation, Lincoln Center, CondéNast, Morgan Stanley, Nissan, Japan Airlines and the City of Bremen, Germany.

His work has been shown in art centers, museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy. Mr. Klinkowstein’s work also can be found in the archive of the Foundation for the Conservation of Contemporary Art in The Netherlands.

Klinkowstein previously was a professor and for part of his tenure, headed the graphic design department at the West Brabant Art and Design College in the Netherlands and since 2000, an Associate Professor of New Media at Hofstra University on Long Island. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Communications Design department of Pratt Institute.
