Synopsis

01.  ANIMATION MASTER CLASS
The Application of Basic Principles of Animation Using the Computer

PRESENTERS

CHRIS WEBSTER  UWE Bristol

ALAN RUDGE  Temasek Design School

The Animation Master Class gives participants an opportunity to get to grips with those essential animation skills based on the underpinning principles of animated dynamics. Coming from Classical 2D animation and CG Animation disciplines these experienced animators understand the importance of animation timing in the creation of believable animation dynamics.

In this workshop they will demonstrate how the various disciplines of animation share common values of timing and dynamics through the application of the principles of animation. Through action analysis students will gain an understanding of naturalistic actions before progressing to make work of their own based upon that study. Using Flash the participants will have the prospect to develop their animation skills through a number of challenging short exercises in order to create animated sequences. Basic knowledge of Flash is assumed.

02. GRAPHIC DESIGN MASTER CLASS

An Alphabet in a Day: Expressive Letterforms

PRESENTERS
ROBERT KETTEL UWE Bristol

PATRICIA TAN Temasek Design School

The extensive availability of digital type has made typeforms part and parcel of everyday digital presentations. The vast array of digital fonts allows for type selection by the user to express the mood appropriate to the presentation. However this has also led to typography that often looks commonplace. There is now a re-emergence of hand-drawn letterforms that are unique and self-expressive.

This workshop aims to help participants blend digital type and hand-drawn letterforms to produce expressive typography that go beyond the stereotypical expressions in computer software’s. This will also provide opportunities for participants to incorporate their second language into their letterform explorations.

03. PRODUCT DESIGN MASTER CLASS

Experience is the Product

PRESENTERS
TOD BURTON UWE Bristol

TAN KHEE HUAT Temasek Design School

The globalization of the manufacturing sector in recent years has resulted in many UK industries moving their activities into low cost economies. The knock-on effect of this has been the change in focus of the British product design community away from technological driven innovation towards innovation borne out of an understanding of people.

The often quoted example of this approach to design is the successful Apple iPod. Apple’s innovation was not in developing MP3 technology but in understanding where, when and how users want to consume music. They then developed a product system that satisfied these needs which now commands a 75% market share. The workshop will introduce participants to the techniques and terminologies used in designing meaningful consumer experiences and illustrate how product designers are employing their traditional understanding of user requirements into this wider realm.

Pre-requisites to Master Classes:

ANIMATION – Basic software knowledge of Flash knowledge

GRAPHIC DESIGN – Basic software knowledge of Microsoft Word & Adobe Photoshop

PRODUCT DESIGN – Basic understanding of the design process & product semantics. Some awareness of observational research would be advantageous.

Note to participants:

1. For all Master Classes, optional to bring a THUMBDRIVE or CD/DVD to save your works.

2. PRODUCT DESIGN Master Class – A digital camera or camera phone is required.
