Four Temasek Design School students from the Diploma in Visual Communication were involved in designing Singapore’s first Racial Harmony logo.
Temasek Design School, under the umbrella of Temasek Polytechnic’s National Education agenda, was approached to participate in this collaborative effort headed by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Christine Frances Lim Hui Yu, Lam Chee An, Tan Jian Rong Benjamin and Tan Wan-Shi Wyncy, in consultation with primary and secondary school students, developed and designed the logo, using the insights, opinions and ideas of the school children.
The logo was formally launched on 9 July 2008, by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. Masagos Zulkifli at the MOE Racial Harmony Forum 2008.
As described on the MOE website, “The MOE Racial Harmony logo is in the shape of a heart, representing both the brotherhood of Singaporeans and the deep emotional, visceral bond that we all share. Red is also the colour of passion and energy, representing how we as a country are moving forward and boldly embracing our challenges and future.
This heart is also made up of four people, all joined together in a joyous embrace in a collective dance as they live in harmony. Where they have joined hands, there is a wonderful coming together of energy and efforts, and the yellow represents a bright light shining forth that illuminates our way and progress forward into the future.”
Students at Temasek Design School are encouraged to participate in local and international design opportunities, from design projects with real clients to world class design competitions. Not only do these experiences prepare our students for the working world, in the process, our students are developing their professional creative portfolios as well.
